Dahl.calvin.edu - Hardware

Dahl consists of a single Tripplite 47U rack containing 45 nodes:
  • 1 "super node" for shared-memory parallel programs, with:
    • CPU: four quad-core Xeon 7300 2.4 GHz
    • main memory: 64 GB RAM
    • secondary memory: two RAID-1 80 GB local disks
    • communication: 2 Gigabit Ethernet adaptors, and 1 Infiniband HCA
  • 42 compute nodes for distributed memory parallel programs, each with:
    • CPU: two quad-core Xeon 5420 2.5 GHz
    • main memory: 16 GB RAM
    • secondary memory: 80 GB local disk
    • communication: 2 Gigabit Ethernet adaptors, 1 Infiniband HCA
  • 2 file server nodes (primary and backup), each with:
    • CPU: two quad-core Xeon 5420 2.5 GHz
    • main memory: 16 GB RAM
    • secondary memory: 80 GB local disk, 10 TB RAID-5 disk array
    • communication: 2 Gigabit Ethernet adaptors, 1 Infiniband HCA

The rack also contains:

  • 1 Qlogic Silverstorm 9040 4X DDR 48-port Infiniband switch
  • 1 SMC 48-port Gigabit Ethernet switch
  • lots of Infiniband and Cat-5e ethernet cables

We also purchased a mouse, keyboard, and a Samsung 27" LCD display, for the console.

The project also required upgrading the host room's climate control and orange power systems. With support from the Calvin College Science Division, we also installed (in a separate room) a refurbished Liebert 65 kva UPS system, to guard against power spikes, brownouts, etc.
